What's New

FCI's Game Changer Awardee for October is
Fresh Start Learning Inc.

October 25, 2018

Fresh Start Learning, located in Milwaukee, works to rebuild lives, strengthen families and advocate on behalf of their client base: victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.

Their holistic approach helps clients – primarily women – achieve doable goals, one step at a time. Through Feet on the Street outreach, the Sisters of Survival crew meets with clients where they are, on the street. They offer a friendly smile and a Purpose-Filled Purse filled with personal care items and a handwritten letter of love to let women know that help is waiting for them when they are ready to become survivors.

“This is special because it offers the individual receiving the purse an opportunity to know that somebody cares about them.” States Nancy Yarborough executive director and founder of FSL.

The journey continues once these women are open to receiving help. At that time, Fresh Start provides resources for counseling, AODA treatment, legal services and medical services. Preparations for re-entering the community begin with life and job skills training, employment opportunities and support groups.

Funds from FCI’s Game Changer grant will help fund Fresh Start’s Purpose Filled Purse program and their Humble Beginnings program which shelters up to six women in their housing unit. Humble Beginnings is crucial because it offers a safe haven for women living on the streets. One unique aspect of the program is when the women arrive they are offered a hot shower and a new pair of fuzzy pajamas and socks to make them feel at home. Once these women are part of FSL they are offered job readiness training, legal help, healthcare and insurance navigation and, most importantly, a place for them to talk with someone who cares about them and understands what it means to make a fresh start in life.

“You have to start somewhere, why not here,” adds Yarborough.

Congratulations to Fresh Start Learning!
