What's New

FCI’s Game Changer Awardee for February is Layton Boulevard West Neighbors!

March 28, 2019

Layton Boulevard West Neighbors (LBWN) applied on behalf of Neighbors in Action (NIA), a program managed and supported by LBWN. NIA builds people power in Silver City, Burnham Park and Layton Park neighborhoods via a seven-week leadership program designed to meet the unique personality of each neighborhood’s residents.

A different expert is invited each week to speak to program participants about a variety of topics including the importance of valuing diversity, civic participation, project planning and development, crime and violence prevention through a public health lens, understanding local government and effective communications skills.

Lessons learned in NIA give neighbors the skills needed to take a lead on local initiatives. Benefits of participating in NIA include the development of neighborhood coalitions comprised of neighbors, neighborhood leaders and key city policymakers.

Program participant Luis Munoz said, “What I liked most about the NIA classes were the speakers. They were very professional and shared with us specific information that will help us work as a team on projects that will improve our neighborhood.”

A goal of LBWN is to make NIA as accessible as possible. They do this by hosting these learning events during evening hours and providing a meal and childcare. In addition, events offer English to Spanish translation and are free to every participant.

Proceeds from the Game Changer grant will be used to support this program in 2019. Congratulations to LBWN and Neighbors in Action!
